Timekeeping is vital to your practice, and has traditionally been difficult to do well while out of the office or away from your computer. It’s estimated that attorneys who don’t track time contemporaneously can lose anywhere from 10 to 30% of their billable time by recording improperly–nearly a full third of their earnings.
Previously, your options were to keep track with your memory, pen and paper, or perhaps the simple timer on your phone and a copy/paste to some note or spreadsheet app. Maybe you even used Google Spreadsheets on your phone. With those options, however, you likely are not capturing all of the time you could be, forgetting an entire billable activity, or perhaps accidentally overwriting that timer you had running.
Imagine being able to quickly open a timer, and once the activity is completed, connect it to a matter for billing and sync it seamlessly back to your firm’s files.
That is Clio’s mobile app. Anywhere you are, for any activity, you can open our application and start a quick timer. Dinner meetings, taking client calls while waiting to pick up your kids from their soccer game, or at a conference out of town and answering client emails. Clio’s timer will run in the background, so you can focus on your work or reference other information throughout the app. Once you are done with the activity, you can stop the timer and relate it to a matter for immediate billing. So, how is that done? Well, let’s start with where you can find your time entries for the day. In the app, swiping towards the right reveals the menu. Once there, tap “Time” and you can see all of your time entries for today by default:
To quickly add a new time entry you already have the details for, rather than tapping “Time”, tap the “+” icon to the right of it:
But what about those situations where you want to start a running timer? Maybe you receive a phone call while watching your kid’s soccer game. It’s very easy to put the caller on speaker phone while in a private area, open the Clio app, and swipe towards the left to reveal the quick timer:
That timer will run in the background while you go about your call. Once you’re done, stop the timer, save, and continue with your day!
