Unbundled Attorney connects prospective clients with attorneys who provide both full representation and unbundled legal services
Who is your perfect client? Are they a high-powered, demanding executive? Or are they a family you can help through unbundled legal services without sacrificing too much bandwidth?
If it’s the latter, Unbundled Attorney can help bring you more paying clients. It’s a lead generation service that connects prospective clients with attorneys who offer family law, immigration, and estate planning services, and who offer both full representation and unbundled legal services.
Dave Aarons, Co-founder and CEO of Unbundled Attorney, took some time to speak with us about how the service is helping lawyers. Read on for what he had to say.
Clio: How does Unbundled Attorney work?
Dave: People who are looking for legal assistance—primarily for family law services, estate planning, or immigration assistance—come to our website looking to connect with an attorney to help them with their case. We educate them about the difference between traditional legal representation and unbundled legal services.
Essentially, we connect with these clients on the website, and then they can opt-in to be connected to an attorney. We match that client up with an attorney that provides a service in the area of law and in the local jurisdiction that they need assistance in.
Clio: Why is this important?
Dave: Ultimately, most people in this marketplace right now are not in a position to come up with $5,000 to get started with an attorney, and many are left without representation. In the last ten years, we’ve gone from about a third of people representing themselves in court to two thirds representing themselves. So you have a complete shift in the market as far as the amount of people that are trying to go it alone.
Clio: How does Unbundled Attorney help lawyers?
Dave: We connect lawyers with premium leads that have been educated on the benefit and value of unbundled legal services. We are upfront with potential clients about the typical costs of retaining attorneys for both full representation and unbundled options. We then connect that lead with an attorney or law firm, which is what is referred to as an “exclusive” lead. It means that our users don’t have to worry about multiple attorneys contacting that one lead.
Clio: What kind of impact are you seeing Unbundled Attorney have on lawyers’ practices?
Dave: From a financial standpoint, they’re able to bring a lot more clients into their practice, pretty much from day one. Once they sign on, are interviewed by us—and they’re a good fit as far as being able to offer unbundled services—we’re able to bring them new leads usually within 24 to 48 hours.
So, for an attorney who wants to build a practice, or maybe doesn’t have a huge client base, or maybe just wants to take on extra clients, within a day or two they can be taking in new leads.
The other piece of it is that they get a great deal of support and training (for example, through our podcast) on the technologies that are out there, the strategies they could use, and the options they could offer clients.
Once an attorney fully understands and has learned how to offer unbundled legal services and how to explain them to the client, they can then start offering them to all of their clients, where appropriate. Since the cost of working with an attorney is less, they’re going to have a lot more people retaining them. So financially, they’re just going to do better.
Clio: On your site, you mention that about half the clients you work with end up retaining attorneys for full legal services. Why do you think that is?
Dave: Certain cases are not a fit for unbundled legal services altogether.
Also, I think clients realize what’s really involved in bringing a case from A to Z. And then as a result, they either find a way to come up with the money themselves, or they borrow it from friends, family or neighbors—wherever they can get it from. They pay for the full representation. If you’re only paying a small amount for the lead, that makes the advertising investment very worthwhile.
You’ll also have a lot of clients that will start working with an attorney on an unbundled basis, but then move to full representation. For example, maybe a lawyer drafts up the documents, delivers them to the client, and the client files pro se with the instructions from the attorney. They then go to mediation and realize that it’s going to be more complicated than they thought, and they come back and they pay for full representation.
So you’ve got those that decide they need full representation right off the bat, and then you also have those that start with unbundled services because that’s an easier price point to start with.
Clio: How does Unbundled Attorney work with Clio?
Dave: At the point that lawyers sign up with Unbundled Attorney, they have the ability to have our leads delivered right into their Clio account, in real time. They could be working from Clio throughout the day, and then new leads will post right into Clio. They’ll see a new contact and a new matter.
The leads can be accessed directly within Clio. Or, if they prefer, they can also access them via email, text message (under our pro plan), or through our app.
Clio: Why are you excited to be a part of the Clio Cloud Conference?
Dave: It’s actually very exciting, because what you’re seeing there is a convergence of all the latest updates on the status of technology in the legal industry. It’s also a convergence of all the different types of platforms and technologies that, all combined, have the capacity to really shift the way a small firm, a solo practitioner, even big firms, can offer services.
Clio, LawPay, Lexicata—these are all the practice management softwares and technologies that are going to make the practice of law so much faster, so much more efficient. It really empowers lawyers to be able to help a lot more people, and to still make money. A legal system that’s been around for hundreds of years adapting this quickly—and the impact that can have—is pretty exciting to see.
