With over 100 million users already signed up (and counting!), Threads has surpassed ChatGPT as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/metas-twitter-rival-threads-hits-100-mln-users-record-five-days-2023-07-10\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=Technology-Roundup&amp;utm_term=071023\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the fastest-growing online platform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and emerged as a Twitter rival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As many lawyers know, social media provides enormous potential for law firms seeking to expand their online presence. Below, we\u2019ll explain how Threads works and how law firms can leverage this new platform to further their online impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is Meta\u2019s Threads?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meta\u2019s Threads launched in the UK on July 6, 2023, allowing Instagram users to share text-driven updates and communicate with other users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This new platform sounds similar to Twitter, right? So, what sets the two apart?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most apparent difference is the character limits. On Twitter, your posts are limited to 280 characters or less, after which you\u2019ll need to post successive comments. On Threads, the character limit is 500 characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Threads accounts also connect to users\u2019 existing Instagram accounts (for example, if you already have an Instagram account, there is no need to create a new Threads account). In contrast, Twitter requires that new users create a Twitter account prior to posting Tweets. To that end, joining Threads is a relatively straightforward process\u2014and it is even easier if you or your firm are already using Instagram.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other differences between Threads and Twitter currently include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Free verification system (users do not have to pay for \u201cVerified\u201d status on Threads)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No paywalls (on Twitter, you\u2019ll have to pay to access certain features)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Posting content (Threads users can attach up to 10 photos or videos to their posts, while Twitter users are limited to four items per post)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remember that Threads is currently in its \u201cinitial\u201d version, meaning that more features\u2014and changes\u2014are likely in progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Meta\u2019s Threads vs. Twitter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Threads arrives at a compelling time\u2014namely, after Twitter owner Elon Musk\u2019s announcement that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/jul\/01\/twitter-applies-reading-limit-after-users-report-issues-with-platform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">unverified accounts would be limited to reading 600 Tweets per day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This announcement follows a tumultuous period for the microblogging app, due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clio.com\/blog\/twitter-alternatives-law-firms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ongoing concerns regarding Twitter\u2019s ownership and the future of the platform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twitter has acknowledged Meta\u2019s Threads\u2014and responded by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-66129215\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">threatening to bring litigation against Meta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for misappropriating trade secrets and intellectual property. While we are yet to see the outcome of this potential litigation, it seems that the new app\u2019s popularity is ruffling Twitter\u2019s feathers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why lawyers should take note of Meta\u2019s Threads<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like any emerging social media platform or tool, expanding your law firm\u2019s social media presence can help educate the public about what your firm offers and generate client interest to your firm. With an increasing number of prospective clients looking for law firms online, having a strong social media presence as part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clio.com\/uk\/blog\/marketing-your-law-firm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">your firm\u2019s marketing plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can help expand your reach with clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, it never hurts to get ahead of the pack.
