Several years ago, our research team undertook a multi-year study to find out precisely that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More specifically, we wanted to better understand what distinguishes thriving law firms from others and uncover the factors that led to sustained revenue growth amongst those highly successful law firms. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By doing so, we hoped to find powerful examples of successful businesses in the legal field\u2014and to define best practices that other legal professionals could adopt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The results? We conducted our analysis using aggregated and anonymised data and did not identify individual law firms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our first step in our research was identifying a group of law firms that had unquestionably outperformed others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To determine what high performance looks like, our research team looked at data as far back as 2013 to design a comparative analysis that zeroed in on three distinct groups. These groups were defined by their total revenue growth since 2013.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We then compared performance data between these groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Growing firms. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Firms that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">grew<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> their revenues by 20% or more over five years. This group also made up our high-performing firm, which we intended to learn from by comparing them to the other groups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Stable firms. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Firms that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">neither increased nor decreased<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> their revenue by more than 20% over five years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Shrinking firms. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Firms that saw revenues <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">decline<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by more than 20% over five years.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Findings: Growing law firms have tripled their revenue<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When assessing new data from all three cohorts, our research team observed that each cohort\u2019s performance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has remained relatively consistent beyond the initial five-year period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In fact, the Growing firms have continued to grow their revenues by over 200% since 2013.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This means that, on average, firms in this group managed to triple their revenue in this period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For comparison, firms in the Shrinking group saw revenues decline by more than 30%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While revenue remains the top-line measure for this analysis, and likely what most firm managers are interested in, there are a series of key performance indicators (KPIs) that function as essential inputs to earning more money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specifically, there are three inputs, or, KPIS. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0These KPIs help indicate why certain law firms\u2014in this case, our Growing firms\u2014have outperformed other groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Key inputs to revenue growth<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The relevant KPIs that help provide insight into more granular areas of performance are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clio.com\/uk\/blog\/how-to-calculate-utilisation-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Utilisation rate<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. How much of a working day do individual lawyers put toward revenue-generating work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Realisation rate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. How much revenue-generating work actually makes it to a client-facing invoice after any discounting or cancelled fees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Collection rate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. For instance:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>A <\/strong><b>strong utilisation rate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> indicates that a firm has a good pipeline for new business, and its lawyers can put time toward working on cases in the interest of their clients.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Strong realisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>collection rates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> indicate that firms have effective systems to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clio.com\/uk\/blog\/payment-methods-lawyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manage all billing and payments<\/a>\u2014and everything to do with client communications surrounding these processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This now brings us to the success trends we\u2019ve seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Growing law firms use online payments<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A consistent trend we\u2019ve seen in the Growing cohort is that these firms <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clio.com\/uk\/blog\/time-billing-software-law-firms-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">adopt technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at a quicker rate than firms in the other two groups. It could certainly help to explain the strong advantage in revenue growth this group has seen over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Giuliana Antonelli, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clio.com\/uk\/customers\/fidlaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FidLaw<\/a>, gives an example of how her billing and payment processing software helped to increase their revenue by 50% and makes collections easier and more convenient for both her firm and her clients:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe love how it\u2019s all part of the one solution, and sending bills with payment links included was so seamless. It has improved our cashflow and saved us a great deal of time in reconciling the ledgers and in facilitating billing and collections.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>More than revenue advantages: Benefits of online payments extends to your clients<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019ve established that Growing firms have adopted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clio.com\/uk\/guides\/improving-collections-law-firm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online legal payment capabilities<\/a> at a more rapid rate than Shrinking firms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet, our study revealed another interesting trend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While Growing firms have adopted online payment capabilities at a more rapid rate than shrinking firms, they are also much more likely to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">use<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> them when collecting payments from clients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In fact, of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">those who<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have adopted online payments, Growing law firms averaged <\/span><b>twice<\/b> <b>as much online payment revenue each month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> compared to Shrinking law firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is an important distinction, one we\u2019ll explore in the next section.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>New technology vs. actually using the technology<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While bringing new technology into your law firm is a good first step, the process of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> incorporating the new capabilities into daily workflows is how its true benefits are realised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When considering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clio.com\/uk\/guides\/cloud-software-pitfalls-to-avoid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">implementing new technologies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, law firms will typically weigh how it will benefit the firm and its clients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But another important aspect to consider is what solutions will be easier to implement to begin with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For instance, finding capabilities that work with existing tools means your law firm experiences a smoother transition.
