Session 3: AI and Client Data: How to Analyse Smarter Without Compromising Confidentiality
In this session, you’ll learn how to:

Mark Ferraretto graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Adelaide in 1989, majoring in Computer Science. Mark spent 25 years as an IT professional and consultant, working in wide variety of industries including education, banking and finance and aviation in both Australia and Hong Kong.
Looking for a new challenge, Mark enrolled to study law in 2011 and graduated from Adelaide University Law School in 2016.
Prior to graduation, Mark was employed by an Adelaide corporate and commercial law firm where he provided commercial advice to technology clients. Mark also utilised his IT skills in-house, writing document automation and matter life-cycle management systems, and introducing and managing the firm’s first use of AI-based electronic discovery systems.
In 2019 Mark joined Flinders University as an Lecturer in Law. Mark established Flinders University’s legal technology curriculum, which included teaching students coding skills and writing legal software applications. Mark returned to private practice in 2021 before returning to Flinders University in 2023 as a Senior Lecturer in Law. Mark now practices privately but also maintains a strong relationship with Flinders University.
In 2022 Mark established the Digital Law Lab, an organisation that provides legal technology training and development to the legal profession and also builds on Mark’s experience in writing simple legal software applications with an access to justice focus.
Mark has held a Private Pilot’s licence since 1990 and a Recreational Pilot’s Certificate since 2022. Mark currently owns an Aeropup Light Sport Aircraft and has also held interests in general aviation aircraft. Mark was also Director of Recreational Australia Limited from 2022 to 2024. Mark is currently a Committee member of Adelaide Soaring Club Inc and also a Friend of the South Australian Aviation Museum.

As a practicing lawyer, Matthew’s career spans government, private practice, enterprise transformation, and global legal technology. He began at the NSW Attorney General’s Department, before practising in Sydney and Melbourne at one of Australia’s largest professional services law firms. He later joined Gartner, where he worked alongside C-level executives at ASX 100 organisations on large-scale digital transformation, operating model redesign, and technology investment strategy. Most recently, he led the U.S. go-to-market strategy as the Chief Commercial Officer for a high-growth Australian legal technology company, working directly with legal teams navigating AI adoption.
Today, Matthew works with law firms and in-house legal teams who want to build teams that are more efficient and structurally prepared for an AI-enabled future. His work focuses on technology investment decisions, AI risk and governance frameworks, process maturity, LLM configuration, analytics, and operating models that deliver a sustainable competitive advantage.

Speaker: Chantal McNaught, Founder and Principal Advisor, 43° Below
Chantal is the Founder and Principal Advisor at 43° Below, advising law firm leaders across Australasia on navigating AI adoption, operational consistency, and professional responsibility. With 14 years in the law and legaltech sectors, she is an admitted lawyer (Supreme Court of New South Wales), a committee member of the Law Association of New Zealand’s Law and Technology Committee, and a PhD candidate researching the ethical and commercial implications of AI on legal practice. Chantal delivers practical frameworks that help lawyers integrate AI with discernment, judgement, robust supervision, and regulatory confidence. Chantal is also Clio Certified.
