Luke Slan – General Manager, Canada at Clio

The legal profession is entering a period of rapid, visible change. Client expectations are shifting, competition is intensifying, and AI is creating new opportunities – and new questions – for firms of every size.

Luke will share Clio’s perspective on the trends shaping the Canadian legal market right now: why the profession has moved past debating whether to use AI, what that shift means in practice, and why the firms thinking strategically about how they deliver legal services will have a meaningful advantage in the years ahead.

9:10-9:55 a.m. - Keynote: What Canadian Firms Actually Need to Know About Legal AI

Damien Riehl – Solutions Champion at Clio

Adoption is nearly universal. The real gap is between using AI and using it well. This session will brings a frank look at what actually matters for Canadian firms right now:

  • The trust gap: evaluating legal AI for accuracy, data handling, and professional responsibility
  • Purpose-built vs. generic tools: the right questions before putting client data near any AI platform
  • The Canadian context: data residency, provincial regulation, and governing without federal legislation
  • The billing conversation: how forward-thinking firms are getting ahead of AI’s impact on the billable hour
  • What’s next: where the profession is heading and how to position your firm now

Practical, honest insight for firms at any stage of their AI journey.
