Jack Newton Named One of Canada’s Most Admired CEOs

Jack Newton, CEO and Co-founder of Clio and author of #1 bestseller The Client-Centered Law Firm earns esteemed award.

Vancouver, BC, November 26, 2020 – Jack Newton, CEO and Co-founder of Clio, has been named as one of Canada’s Most Admired CEOs of 2020. Founded by Waterstone Human Capital, the award recognizes leaders who have achieved significant accomplishments in their career and foster a culture within their organization that enhances performance and sustains a competitive advantage.

“I am incredibly honoured and humbled to receive this recognition along with peers across the country, especially in a year as challenging as 2020,” said Jack Newton, CEO and Co-founder of Clio. “Our mission is to transform the practice of law, for good, and our goal is to be one of the highest-performing software companies in the world. Our focus on enabling our employees to do the best work of their careers allows us to achieve both. Today, we are seeing the positive impact we can have on the legal industry, lawyers, and their clients while also creating a thriving corporate culture.”

Jack’s commitment to Clio is unwavering. Some of his recent successes include closing Clio’s US$250 million Series D financing, the largest growth equity investment in Canadian history at the time; launching Clio’s first acquisition, transforming Clio into a multi-product company; and publishing his #1 bestselling book, The Client-Centered Law Firm

Under Jack’s leadership, Clio successfully transitioned to a remote work environment and found new and innovative ways to keep employees connected, engaged, and supported over the past year. In addition to supporting employees, Jack launched the company’s COVID-19 Legal Relief Initiative, committing $1 million in educational resources, free and discounted software, and direct financial assistance to help law firms navigate the challenges of this year.

To further educate the industry, Jack launched ongoing research into the impacts of COVID-19, in which the findings were made widely available for free. As part of the industry analyses featured in the annual Legal Trends Report, Clio’s ongoing research into the impacts of COVID-19 analyzes aggregated and anonymized data—from tens of thousands of legal professionals using Clio’s legal practice management software—to learn more about the challenges US legal professionals face due to the global pandemic.

Each of these accomplishments is rooted in the strong market foundation that Jack has built. Through the years, Jack has invested significant time and energy into shaping conversations and building a community of innovation that’s supportive of the vision that he’s so passionate about. Jack’s success is built on the idea of a growing flywheel effect: as the mass and speed of the flywheel increases, so does its momentum and impact of results. There is no one idea, initiative, or project that wins success. Instead, Jack’s success is a result of the compounding impact of ideas, initiatives, and projects that are united by a broader vision. And every new endeavour opens more space and opportunity to grow that broader vision.

“At Waterstone we believe corporate culture drives performance and that it’s an organization’s greatest asset,” said Marty Parker, President and Chief Executive Officer of Waterstone Human Capital and Chair of Canada’s Most Admired™ CEO Awards. “We are proud to be able to present the 2020 Canada’s Most Admired CEO Awards to a dynamic group of leaders who have shown a commitment to building and sustaining high performance cultures that serve as a competitive advantage.”

Jack has been decorated with some of the highest honours in Canadian business, including the EY’s Entrepreneur Of The Year award and BIV’s Forty under 40. Clio has also been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies by Deloitte, and as having one of Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures by Waterstone Human Capital. Additionally, Clio was the first company to receive BC Tech Association’s Company of the Year Anchor Success category when it launched last year. Most recently, Jack has been awarded Person of the Year at the 2020 Technology Impact Awards, held by the BC Tech Association.
