Clio Brings Pay Later with Affirm to Canadian Law Firms

Canadian law firms can now offer clients a flexible way to pay over time through Clio Payments.

Clio, the global leader in legal AI, today announced that Pay Later with Affirm (NASDAQ: AFRM) is now available to law firms in Canada through Clio Payments. Affirm empowers consumers and helps merchants drive growth through its payment network.

The new payment option gives approved clients the ability to pay legal fees in installments over time, while firms get paid in full upfront, making it easier for Canadians to access the legal support they need. Affirm never charges late fees, hidden fees, or compounding interest, so clients always know what they’ll pay.

Law firms and their clients often operate within a misaligned financial model. Firms may require large upfront retainers to begin work, while clients may not have immediate access to funds, even when a positive outcome is expected. This friction limits access to legal services and constrains firm growth, a challenge that is especially acute for solo, small, and mid-sized firms.

“Canadian law firms tell us that financial friction is one of the most stressful parts of running a practice,” said AJ Axelrod, Vice President, Payments and Financial Services at Clio. “Pay Later with Affirm changes that dynamic. By building this directly into the Clio platform, we’re making legal services more accessible and more sustainable for people across Canada, and we’re helping firms operate with financial confidence.”

Pay Later is automatically available and easy to use. Affirm manages billing and payment collection, while the firm receives the invoice amount up front. By embedding Pay Later directly into Clio Payments and Clio Manage, Clio ensures that every transaction is seamlessly reconciled, kept compliant with trust accounting rules, and managed within a single, centralized workflow.

“Our partnership with Clio reflects a growing demand for a way of paying that matches the way modern businesses operate,” said Wayne Pommen, Chief Revenue Officer at Affirm. “By embedding Affirm directly into Clio’s platform, we’re helping to expand access to legal services, and in turn, helping Canadian firms grow their businesses.”
