Today, we’ll roll out a big cake with 6 candles on it and celebrate Clio’s 6th anniversary! We’ve come a long way from that ABA Solo & Small Firm annual meeting back in 2008, when co-founders Jack Newton and Rian Gauvreau launched Clio. Even longer from that drawing on a napkin when the idea for Clio was first concocted or that playground in Edmonton where the dashing duo first met. This past year in particular has been a watershed year as Clio continues to grow and evolve. Here’s a recap of six of our biggest successes in the past year.
Hey, Big Investor
First off, there can be no further proof of Clio’s success than the March 2014 announcement of a $20 million Series C funding round led by Bessemer Venture Partners. This investment puts Clio into a unique position in the legal tech space, and ensures that the company has the resources needed to refine and further develop a first-in-class solution.
Clouds over Chicago
Last week in Chicago, we hosted a hugely successful Clio Cloud Conference. The discussions, the speakers, the vendors, and all those who attended made it the success it was. Judging by the fact that it trended on Twitter within seconds of opening and the glowing reviews of it, it was a welcome change to the legal conference circuit. We expect more in 2015.
And just last night, that hard work and accomplishment were recognized and celebrated in grand fashion. Jack Newton was one of 30 BC-based entrepreneurs honored at the 21st annual Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Gala, hosted at Vancouver’s spectacular convention center.
A Growing Team
Since we last rolled out the birthday cake, the team at Clio has grown—nearly doubling from about 80 employees this time last year to over 130 today. With more being recruited and hired. Some of those have been strategic hires at the executive level joining an already dynamic executive team, coming from companies that are well known and established. But every member of our team shares this: they are high calibre, high performance employees who care about Clio and its customers.
A Growing Platform
In the past year, we’ve also announced big product upgrades, improvements, and integrations. But if there’s been one change that encapsulates all that Clio has done in the past year, it is that it has emerged as a platform for law firms, not just one product or tool they find useful.

And finally, none of the above would have happened if it weren’t for you—Clio’s customers. The numbers are in the tens of thousands—forward-thinking lawyers who are proving that early adoption of cloud-based law practice management saves time and money and is a huge competitive advantage.
