Clio launches a complete drafting experience in Clio Work, built for every way lawyers draft

Clio Work can create bespoke documents, automate firm-approved templates, complete court forms, or refine existing drafts with AI.

Clio, the global leader in legal AI, today introduced a new drafting experience in Clio Work that brings generative drafting, document automation, and full document editing into one workspace. Legal professionals can draft a document from scratch, generate repeatable documents from firm-approved templates, and access a library of more than 40,000 court forms.

The drafting capabilities are built on the understanding that different situations require different drafting tools. A novel motion calls for a fresh draft, a routine engagement letter belongs in a firm-approved template, a standard filing may only need the right court form, and an existing draft may just need sharpening. Clio Work now supports each of those approaches in a single place, so legal professionals can choose the right tool for each document rather than the one their software allows. Legal professionals can write, format, review, and refine documents alongside AI in Clio Work, or bring Clio Work directly into Microsoft Word with Clio for Word, which launched earlier this year.

“AI is dramatically improving legal work, but it’s also expanding the number of tools lawyers need to use,” said John Foreman, Chief Product Officer at Clio. "Clio solves that problem by bringing a comprehensive kit of AI drafting tools into the same place lawyers research precedent, analyze facts, and build strategy. Legal professionals can now produce a bespoke document or a full set of court forms in the time it used to take to open the right template. This is about bringing AI to the work, not the work to AI.”

Drafting tools for every type of legal work

Legal professionals can now access the following tools in Clio Work, each designed for the different drafting tasks encountered in a typical day.

  • Generative drafting creates bespoke legal documents in seconds.
  • Document automation produces repeatable documents from firm-approved templates, automatically populating client and matter information using conditional logic.
  • A pre-loaded library gives lawyers access to thousands of fillable court forms across all 50 U.S. states, federal courts, and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The forms stay up to date automatically, so firms are always working from the current version.
  • Live redlining actively proposes edits to a drafted document, with direct edits or track changes implemented at the lawyer’s discretion.
  • Fine-tuning functionality lets lawyers easily apply styles, tables, footnotes, tracked changes, and everything else they would expect from a premier document editor.
  • Clio for Word is a Microsoft Word add-in that brings Clio Work’s AI-powered drafting, revision, and review into the environment where most lawyers work every day.

The workspace becomes even more powerful as part of Clio’s Intelligent Legal Work Platform. All outputs are grounded in the context of the matter and in Clio’s library of more than one billion legal documents, and as a result, the work reflects the facts of the matter, the firm’s preferred approach, and relevant legal authority, not generic AI output. Clio already knows the lawyer’s work, so nothing has to be explained or uploaded.

For example, when a client is ready to initiate a divorce, a family law attorney can ask Clio Work to create and populate the entire document set at once. The set will include jurisdiction-specific court forms such as the petition for dissolution, summons, and proof-of-service documents, along with a marital settlement agreement based on a firm-approved template. Clio Work bases those documents on the information already available in the matter and flags any missing details. It can then generate a tailored client questionnaire, using the matter to draft a letter explaining what the client needs to review and complete. Once the client responds, the missing financial, family, and case-specific information automatically populates across every relevant document, so the lawyer can review, finalize, and file the complete set directly from Clio Work.

The new drafting capabilities are now available to all Clio Work customers in the United States. To learn more, visit clio.com/work/drafting/.
