Goldman Sachs Recognizes Clio CEO and Founder Jack Newton Among the Most Exceptional Entrepreneurs of 2022

Goldman Sachs Award - Jack Newton

The award celebrates growth, development, and leadership across a vast range of industries

Clio, the world’s leading provider of cloud-based legal technology, today announced the recognition of its CEO and Founder, Jack Newton, by Goldman Sachs as one of the Most Exceptional Entrepreneurs of 2022 at its Builders and Innovators Summit in Healdsburg, California.

The Goldman Sachs Awards ceremony brings together rising entrepreneurs and seasoned business leaders building enduring companies that reshape industries and drive progress through innovation.

Newton pioneered cloud-based legal practice management software in 2008 with a vision of transforming the legal experience for all. He is recognized for spearheading a series of groundbreaking milestones in the legal technology industry and leading Clio through accelerated growth. Under his leadership, Clio made history as the first legal practice management unicorn globally with a valuation of US$1.6B. The Canadian company has since attained centaur status, a title reserved for private SaaS companies that achieve more than US$100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). Approximately 150 companies globally have passed this threshold, making this designation seven times rarer than the tech unicorn.

Clio was the first cloud-based legal technology to market and has since grown significantly, creating the legal industry’s first operating system, which includes legal practice management, CRM, legal payments, document automation, and an app ecosystem of over 200+ integration partners. A visionary focused on fostering innovation, Newton launched an investment arm, Clio Ventures, to make direct equity investments in promising early-stage companies creating innovative solutions in legal technology. He is also an individual investor in legaltech startups in Canada and the US.

“I’m honored to be recognized by Goldman Sachs alongside other visionary entrepreneurs who are driving their respective industries forward in exciting and innovative ways,” said Newton. “By putting our customers and their clients front-and-center in everything we do, we are realizing our mission to transform the legal experience for all. This award represents Clio’s ability to foster advancements in legal services in technology, driving positive social change and creating a more inclusive legal system.”

“We’re delighted to recognize Jack Newton as one of the most exceptional entrepreneurs of 2022,” said David M. Solomon, Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs. “They have made extraordinary contributions to a wide range of fields, and all of us are looking forward to meeting with these innovative thinkers.”

Newton is the author of The Client-Centered Law Firm, a #1 bestseller helping law firms thrive in today’s client-driven era. He continues to educate the legal community on the industry’s future, security, ethics, privacy considerations, and the benefits of running a law firm from the cloud. He has been recognized with some of the highest honors in Canadian business, including Canada’s Most Admired CEO by Waterstone Human Capital, EY’s Entrepreneur Of The Year award, and an Anchor of Business in Vancouver’s BC500 List. Jack was named Person of the Year at the 2020 Technology Impact Awards, held by the BC Tech Association.

In addition to honoring the most exceptional entrepreneurs, the Builders and Innovators Summit consists of general sessions and clinics led by seasoned entrepreneurs, academics, business leaders, and resident scholars.
