10 years ago, when Jack Newton and Rian Gauvreau founded Clio, they had no idea whether lawyers would embrace the cloud. However, they knew there was a very clear opportunity to bring cloud technology to the legal industry, and they were determined to give it their best shot.

What’s happened since then has been truly humbling. 10 years later, with 150,000 customers in 90 countries, Clio is the most widely used practice management software in the world—thanks to a whole lot of support from legal professionals like you.

Here’s a look at some of our proudest accomplishments so far:

220+ improvements added in one year alone

Clio has been constantly improving since it was first built 10 years ago, but in 2017, we were proud to roll out our biggest update yet: We completely reengineered Clio from the ground up to be faster and more intuitive than ever before.

Built based on 600+ hours of interviews, 60+ days of visits with Clio customers, and countless hours spent reviewing customer and industry feedback, the new Clio experience features over 220 improvements that make all of your daily tasks go even more smoothly.

70+ partners added to the Clio App Directory

What started as cloud-based legal practice management software has become much more. Today, Clio is the world’s most powerful practice management platform, directly integrating with over 70 apps and services including Microsoft Office 365, Dropbox, and QuickBooks Online.

To spur further innovation in legal technology, we launched our $100,000 Launch//Code contest* and a $1 million Developer Fund in 2017.

5 Clio Cloud Conferences held

What started out as a relatively small event aimed at sharing the power of legal technology is now widely regarded as the best legal technology event in the industry—and it keeps getting bigger and better every single year. Attendance at the Clio Cloud Conference has nearly doubled every year since its inception, with 1,200 people attending the 2017 conference.

With insightful talks from always-incredible speakers, the Clio Cloud Conference is an experience many legal professionals never forget. Now in its sixth year, the Clio Cloud Conference is taking place in New Orleans on October 4-5, 2018.

Jack Newton and Rian Gauvreau built the very first version of Clio themselves—while both were still working full-time jobs. But when they found out that one engaged customer, Catherine Merino Reisman, was depending on Clio to run her practice, they both quit their jobs to focus on Clio full-time.

In honor of Catherine, Clio launched the Reisman Awards at the 2017 Clio Cloud Conference. We were humbled and inspired by the stories of our winners, and we can’t wait to hear from more incredible Clio customers this year.

2 Legal Trends Reports published

Data has become the world’s most valuable commodity. Yet, for as long as the legal profession has been around, lawyers have lacked the data necessary to making smart decisions about the future of their practice.

To help close this information gap, Clio launched its inaugural Legal Trends Report in 2016, followed by the 2017 Legal Trends Report, which dove even deeper. Using aggregated and anonymized data from Clio, supplemented by large-scale research surveys, the report investigates some of the most pressing issues that ultimately determine success for law firms.

250+ employees added

What started out as a team of two quickly started growing, and today, Clio is a company of over 250 high-performing individuals.

Importantly, Clio’s culture has scaled alongside the company’s rapid growth: It’s remained an environment where every employee is encouraged to innovate, share ideas, and point out and take on new challenges.

4 offices opened

In its early days, Clio operated out of Jack and Rian’s homes, with Jack’s son Ian holding the honorary title of “VP Deals.” In 2011, Clio’s Vancouver office opened. Two short years later, Clio opened its Dublin and Toronto offices, and this year, we’ve opened an office in Calgary as well.

$22 million in free software donated

As part of its mission to transform the practice of law, for good, Clio believes it is crucial to support the next generation of legal professionals in learning how to leverage legal technology early in their careers. We provide access to our software free of charge to legal clinics, paralegal programs, nonprofits such as the California Innocence Project and the RISE Women’s Legal Centre, and law schools at Stanford, Harvard, Suffolk, and Boston University. In 2017 alone, over $6 million in free software was donated.

Countless relationships with customers and legal industry members

Feedback from the people who use Clio every day is vital to making Clio the most powerful practice management platform available. Over the past 10 years, we’ve been blown away by the legal professionals who’ve sent us thousands of emails, spent hundreds of hours on the phone with us, and invited us into their practices to provide feedback that has made Clio better for everyone.

We’ve also received invaluable support from bar associations, law societies, our integration partners, and others across the legal industry. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, and we’re incredibly excited to continue our journey together.
