Clio Launches Legal Accounting in Clio Manage for Canadian Law Firms
September 23, 2026
Canadian firms can now manage their books alongside matters, billing, and payments, reducing the need to reconcile records across separate systems and helping maintain compliance.
Clio, the global leader in legal AI, today launched legal accounting for Canadian law firms in Clio Manage. Firms can now manage matters, billing, payments, and bookkeeping in one connected system, carrying financial information through from the work performed to the books and reports used to run the firm. Built for solo, small, and mid-sized firms across Canada, the functionality is designed around the financial realities of running a law firm, including the trust accounting requirements set by provincial and territorial law societies.
Canadian law firms operate within a demanding regulatory framework. Lawyers are responsible for the accuracy of their financial records, regardless of who manages the books, with trust accounting carrying particular weight–errors are among the leading causes of lawyer discipline in Canada. Maintaining a clear connection between the matter and the firm’s financial records gives lawyers greater oversight of their accounting obligations.
Legal accounting in Clio Manage creates that connection by bringing billing, payments, and bookkeeping together. Firms gain a more current view of their financial position while reducing the need to reconcile information across separate tools. Transactions are reflected in the financial record as work happens, helping firms keep their books current and maintain compliance with applicable law-society requirements.
Firms in Canada can now use accounting in Clio Manage to:
- Complete three-way reconciliation of the trust ledger, client ledgers, and trust bank statement.
- Track GST, HST, QST, and PST, apply the correct rate by province, and capture input tax credits so records are ready for the CRA and the firm’s accountant.
- Report on an accrual or cash basis, with profit and loss statements, tax summary reports, balance sheets, and trial balances.
- Connect Canadian bank feeds for CAD accounts and print Canadian cheques.
- Move through guided Canadian onboarding and setup to get firms up and running.
- Simplify routine bookkeeping with bank feed categorization and suggested matching to reduce mistakes.
“Canadian law firms should not have to separate the books from the work that creates the transactions,” said Luke Slan, General Manager, Canada at Clio. “By bringing legal accounting into Clio Manage, firms can carry billing and payment information into their financial records, reduce cross-system reconciliation, and maintain clearer oversight of their trust obligations.”
CloudAct CPA Professional Corporation, an accounting consultant involved with piloting accounting for Canadian firms, added, “Clio’s accounting functionality has been designed for Canadian law firms, including accrual reporting, GST/HST tracking and bank feeds. It eliminates duplicate data entry, gives firms and their external accounting/finance team secure access from anywhere, and makes the move away from older desktop software much less intimidating. I would encourage every Canadian law firm to consider legal accounting in Clio before its next month-end.”
